Juvia Loxar
Fairy Tail

Inspiration: I don’t know why I started reading Fairy Tail, maybe I was just bored on a lazy afternoon and just looking for something new to read, but I got hooked. I love this series! Something about Juvia’s character really attracted me…like how she talked in third person, misread certain situations, and totally and openly obsessed over Gray-sama. Her face every time he starts taking off his clothes is just priceless. I decided I wanted to make her outfit from when she joins Fairy Tail, so I waited for a color picture to become available. I was expecting her outfit to be mainly blue since she’s a water mage, but when that first color picture came out I was really surprised…light pink, lime green, and lavender? I wasn’t sure about the color combination at first, but I made it anyway and I’m glad I did because somehow those colors really bring each other out in photos.

Materials/Construction Details: The top is a blue ponte knit lined in hand-made lime green bias tape, laced up the center with lavender cord. I also used the same ponte fabric for the underskirt and the hat. The undershirt, skirt, and flaps on the hat are made out of a white knit dyed a very light pink. The waves and other details on the skirt were actually appliquéd on rather than painted. I felt that would give the design a more uniform look and I was also worried about messing it up if I tried to paint them. The brooch and armbands were made out of craft foam and the boots were painted blue in the appropriate areas.

I was expecting the hat to be a challenge, but it ended up not being too hard. I bought a hat from costume store and cut the brim off. I then stretched the blue knit fabric over the hat, gluing it underneath, until it was smooth on top. I used my light pink knit with stiff interfacing to make the flaps on the side. Then I cut the swirl pattern out of lime green and ironed it onto the front.

Wig: The wig is a scruffy long in light blue from cosworx. This color was brand new when I bought it and I was so excited because it was the perfect wig for Juvia. Not much work needed to be done to it.

Prop: I bought the parasol from an online store based in Japan. It was really hard to find an umbrella that had the right curve to it, but I lucked into finding one that was not only pink, but also had cute polka dots and a ruffle trim. I added one big heart and two small hearts to each panel, 24 hearts total. I debuted this costume at a con that was having horrible overcast/wet weather, so my costume ended up being quite appropriate.

Mila: I purchased white go-go boots, similar to these: http://bit.ly/fJmNuT and then painted the blue pattern on. I have also seen the boots being sold on ebay, though I cannot vouch for the quality: http://bit.ly/fuxk4t Good luck!

First of all, you are the greatest Juvia cosplayer I’ve ever seen! Secondly, I have two questions: first, could you tell me how you made the hat? And second, this is reaaaally confusing me in my own construction of this costume: how did you make the skirt? Is it one layer or two? I’m so confused! >.<

How did you make the skirt? Is it pleated? A 2 piece? How did you make it balloon outwards rather than fall flat? The skirt is my biggest problem T-T

This is one of the most amazing Juvia cosplay I’ve seen. I was wondering where you found the wave applique pattern around the skirt? I’m also having a hard time making the vest, so I was curious to see if you would help explain that to me. Thank you!

Waaahhh~ Gorgeous cosplay. I’m glad I came upon your site. It gave me inspiration to do Juvia. I was really unsure about cosplaying her but I was able to see that it is possible to make it so I’m willing to give it a try!

I was wondering if you can help me a bit with the vest part? I’m really unsure how to do it. And the skirt…are they’re two layers? I wanted to be able to buy a blue knee length skirt and sew on the white parts but then it probably wonldnt be the same color as the vest and I was worried about that.

Also if you don’t mind me asking, how much did this whole cosplay cost and how much of each material did you buy? I’m sorry if I’m asking quite a lot, I understand if you can’t respond immediately. Thank you!!!
