Frodo Baggins (Bunny suit Original Design)
Lord of the Rings

Inspiration: Thursday night at Dragon Con is all about bunny costumes. As a big Tolkien fan, I designed a couple Lord of the Rings bunny suits for my friends and me to fit the theme.

Materials/Construction Details: Fabric choices were important to me when deciding how to go about making this costume. I designed the suit to look like Frodo’s waistcoat, including pocket flaps and buttons. I chose a rich reddish brown velvet to represent the vest and an off-white linen to represent the undershirt. I also purchased some fabric from Spoon Flower in the Elvish script, which I lined my suit in and used to make the cuffs and the inside of the ears. I used a mash-up of a few bunny suit mock-ups I had and Yaya Han’s McCalls pattern to put the suit together. It includes steel boning to give it structure. Instead of the traditional bunny suit bow tie, I instead made a green wool capelet, which I clasped together with an elven leaf brooch.

Because we were hobbits, Jessie and I decided to wear clear low heeled shoes. Jessie had the idea of adding a bow made out of wig fiber to the top of the shoe to represent harry hobbit feet. I wanted to have a more realistic bunny tail, so I made a design using long white fur and velvet that matched the wig color in a more teardrop shape instead of the traditional circle. I used the same brown velvet to make the ears, which are on a wire frame.

Wig: I used a Jane in dark brown from Arda wigs. I only had to trim the bangs!

Prop: No Frodo costume, even a bunny costume, would be complete without the one ring of power and his trusty weapon, Sting.
